FleurieuNet aims to extend the Helium LoRaWAN network, used to power the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) across the wine-growing region of McLaren Vale (and surrounding areas) on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Network usage
If you’re involved in any kind of agribusiness and use, or plan to use wireless sensors to monitor soil or weather conditions via a mobile app, by hosting a Helium hotspot you’ll be contributing to a usable network for your own smart devices.
Get paid to host a hotspot
The wireless hotspots themselves mine cryptocurrency. By hosting a hotspot, you are rewarded with helium (IOT) tokens. These can be exchanged for any other cryptocurrency, or cashed out to Australian dollars.

The hardware

Helium hotspot / miner

FleurieuNet uses the Linxdot Helium Hotspot. It is specifically designed for Helium Longfi and utilises LoRaWan technology. Powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and 32GB eMMC storage, it is both powerful and efficient, requiring as little as 12w to operate.

Once connected to an ethernet connection, it becomes part of the Helium network, contributing to the world’s largest wireless network. Not only that, it simultaneously mines the IOT crypto currency (IOT).

THE NETWORK
FleurieuNet aims to establish a Helium network in and around the wine-growing region of McLaren Vale. Helium (dubbed ‘The People’s Network’) is a decentralised wireless IoT (Internet of Things) network that relies on its users to build the network. It allows people to connect devices at a fraction of the cost of 4G and 5G mobile plans, without needing to maintain a costly infrastructure. Helium utilises ‘LoRaWAN’, a low-power, wide area networking protocol built on top of the LoRa radio modulation technique. It wirelessly connects devices to the internet and manages communication between end-node devices and network gateways.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Given the large number of grape growers in the region, FleurieuNet feels it is the perfect location to establish a large scale privately owned LoRaWAN network. Anybody deploying wireless sensors and other devices in the AgTech sphere will find this an appealing proposition on two levels.

The first is obviously a low cost network that offers a dedicated alternative to cellular 4G and 5G services. Not so obvious however, is the innovative reward system Helium offers network contributors. The Helium network is built on blockchain technology – the same technology that underpins cryptocurrency transactions. In exchange for deploying a Helium ‘hotspot’, Helium rewards hotspot owners with IOT crypto tokens (IOT).

THE REWARDS
FleurieuNet is offering the opportunity to host one of our hotspots, in exchange for a percentage of the rewards earned by that particular device. We will provide all hardware and installation, and pay monthly rewards to our hosts. This process is completely transparent, as the rewards generated by all devices (anywhere in the world) are public, so hotspot hosts can verify rewards at any time via the Helium Explorer. Cryptocurrencies are still currencies, so even if you have no interest in crypto, you can always exchange any IOT tokens you’ve earned into any other crypto coin, or of course into Australian dollars. That’s up to you.
